A light-hearted exchange between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G7 Summit has attracted widespread attention on social media.
During an interaction at the summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Meloni jokingly referred to herself and Modi as the "most famous couple on Instagram," drawing laughter and sparking online discussion. The comment appeared to reference the viral popularity of their social media interactions, which have frequently generated memes and reactions from internet users.
The remark comes months after Prime Minister Modi's visit to Italy, during which the two leaders shared a widely circulated video featuring a gift exchange. In the clip, Modi presented Meloni with a packet of Melody chocolates from India. The video, posted on social media, quickly gained traction online and amassed millions of likes.
The moment further popularised the term "Melodi"; a blend of Meloni and Modi's names, and a play on the chocolate brand Melody; coined by social media users to describe the friendly rapport between the two leaders.
Beyond the viral moments, the interaction reflects the growing diplomatic engagement between India and Italy. The two countries have been working to deepen cooperation under the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which focuses on areas including trade, investment, defence, clean energy, technology, innovation and cultural exchanges.
The leaders met as part of the broader G7 Summit discussions, where member nations addressed a range of global issues. Among the outcomes announced by G7 leaders was a commitment to strengthen efforts against international drug trafficking, money laundering and transnational organised crime through enhanced cooperation and security measures.
While the exchange between Modi and Meloni generated considerable online interest, officials from both countries have continued to emphasise the importance of strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
