India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Wednesday met China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the 23rd meeting to the Special Representatives of India and China.

The meeting was in line with the agreement made during a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan. The Special Representatives (SRs) emphasised the importance of maintaining a political perspective on the overall India-China relationship while seeking a fair and reasonable framework for settling the boundary dispute. They expressed their commitment to injecting more vitality into this process.

KEY CONSENSUS

  • Doval and Yi reiterated the importance of maintaining a political perspective on the overall bilateral relationship while seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable framework for settling the India-China border issue.

  • They positively affirmed the implementation of the latest disengagement agreement of October 2024 and emphasized the need to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas. They stressed that border issues should not hinder the normal development of bilateral ties between India and China.

  • Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continue seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable package solution to the boundary issue, in line with the political guidelines agreed upon by the special representatives of the two countries in 2005, and pledged to take positive measures to promote this process.

  • They agreed to strengthen cross-border exchanges and cooperation, including the resumption of Indian pilgrims' travel to Tibet, cross-border river cooperation, and Nathula border trade.

  • The two sides agreed to further strengthen the Special Representatives meeting mechanism and instructed the China-India Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Affairs (WMCC) to implement follow-up actions.

  • NSA Doval invited Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India at a "mutually convenient" time to hold the next round of Special Representatives' talks.
