Khalistani extremists continue to exploit Canadian soil to promote, fund, and plan violent activities primarily targeting India, according to a report released by Canada’s intelligence agency, CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service).
The annual report, which outlines threats to national security, states that individuals and networks associated with the Khalistan movement remain active in Canada. “Khalistani extremists continue to use Canada as a base for the promotion, fundraising or planning of violence primarily in India," the report notes.
It further adds that these extremist elements support or seek to use violent means to establish an independent nation-state—Khalistan—largely within India’s Punjab region. The findings come at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa over the presence and activities of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada.
Adding to the alarm, intelligence inputs have revealed that Khalistani organisations were planning to stage protests in Canada starting from the moment Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands for the G7 Summit. The development had raised serious security concerns among Indian authorities.
Sources confirmed that central agencies in India have issued detailed advisories to their Canadian counterparts, warning of potential threats and urged stringent security arrangements for the Indian delegation.
The warnings come in the wake of increasing activity by pro-Khalistan terror outfits in Canada, which have repeatedly targeted Indian diplomatic missions and officials. Given the resurgence of these groups and their growing clout in the region, Indian agencies fear that PM Modi’s presence could be exploited for disruptive demonstrations or more severe incidents.
