The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Navi Mumbai for the next three days.

An IMD official said the temperatures are currently six to seven degrees above normal. Mentioning about the unusual weather condition, the official added that Mumbai’s temperature reached 38.5 degrees in the month of February.

An official told CNBC-TV18 that temperatures are likely to rise by one or two degrees on Wednesday, February 26, following which the temperatures may drop by 1-2 degrees on February 27 and 28. This, however, will not bring any significant relief from the high temperature, the official added.

There is no official communication on the heatwave situation yet, even as weather stations like Santacruz show heatwave parameters have been met. The CNBC-TV18 report quoted sources as adding that there is a heatwave-like condition in the Konkan belt.

IMD Scientist Dr Soma Sen Roy, speaking on Western disturbances approaching North Indian region, said, “Rainfall will start increasing over the Western Himalayan region. We have heavy rainfall warnings for the region of February 26-28."
