Filmmaker Karan Johar made a memorable debut at the Met Gala 2026, bringing Indian art to the global fashion stage with a dramatic and deeply symbolic look.

Dressed in a custom ensemble by designer Manish Malhotra, Johar’s outfit—titled “Framed in Eternity”—was inspired by the iconic works of legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma. The look transformed couture into a living canvas, aligning perfectly with this year’s theme, which celebrates fashion as an art form.

The ensemble featured a sharply tailored, vintage-style jacket paired with a striking hand-painted cape that extended several feet, showcasing motifs drawn from Ravi Varma’s timeless artworks. Crafted over months by dozens of artisans, the outfit stood out as a fusion of heritage, craftsmanship, and high fashion.

Sharing his thoughts, Johar highlighted his emotional connection to Ravi Varma’s work, noting that the artist’s ability to “paint feelings” resonates deeply with his own storytelling in cinema. He described the appearance as more than just fashion—calling it a moment of artistic expression and cultural representation on a global platform.

The Met Gala 2026, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, revolved around the theme “Costume Art,” encouraging attendees to treat clothing as a form of storytelling and artistic expression. Johar’s look not only embraced this idea but also brought Indian heritage into the spotlight.
