Punjabi singer Karan Aujla has landed in trouble after his song “MF Gabhru" sparked controversy over the alleged use of objectionable language against women.
Taking cognisance of the matter, the Punjab State Women’s Commission has issued a suo motu notice, stating that the lyrics are disrespectful and promote misogyny.
“Everyone has listened to the song and objected, but it still gets millions of views. It’s not just the Women’s Commission’s responsibility to notice this; listeners and society also must reject such language… In the songs, the singer neither controls their language nor considers respecting mothers… They do this to make money. But it impacts our children…" Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
The commission has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, to initiate an inquiry through a senior official and submit a report.
Karan Aujla has been ordered to appear before the commission on August 11 in connection with the case. The controversy has reignited debates over lyrical content and the portrayal of women in Punjabi music.
