Atul Kumar, a young man from the holy town of Kedarnath in Uttarakhand has achieved something extraordinary. The son of a pony handler Rudraprayag who spent years helping pilgrims climb the steep, rocky paths of the Himalayas is now headed to one of India’s most prestigious institutes — IIT Madras.
Atul recently cleared the IIT-JAM (Joint Admission Test for Master’s), a national-level exam, and secured admission for higher studies in MSc Maths. His story has touched hearts across the country — not just because of his success, but because of the odds he fought against to get there.
His father, a pony handler is the main earner for the family. Atul used to assist him during holidays. His elder sister is married, and his younger sister recently completed her education
A Late Start, But Relentless Focus
Atul returned from the Kedarnath season in June. It was already late to start preparing for a national-level exam like IIT-JAM which was scheduled for February. But he did not let that stop him. With the help of a close friend, Mahavir, who had already prepared for the exam, Atul got access to notes and guidance. He began studying seriously from July and continued consistently till January.
“I used to study every day. I knew I had limited time, so I tried to make the most of it,” Atul shared.
Strength in Struggles
Life at home wasn’t easy either. Atul’s father, who works as a pony handler, is the sole earning member of the family. Atul himself used to assist him during school holidays. His elder sister is married, and his younger sister has just completed her studies.
But even in these difficult circumstances, Atul never lost sight of his goal. “My biggest motivation was to move ahead — to break the cycle and do something different,” he said.
A Community’s Pride
The news of Atul’s selection brought immense joy not just to him but to his entire village.
“More than my own happiness, it was the smiles on people’s faces that moved me,” he said. “Teachers, neighbours, even people who never taught me, called to congratulate me. That meant the world.”
Now set to begin a new chapter at IIT Madras, Atul carries with him not just books and dreams but also the hopes of an entire community that sees him as proof that nothing is impossible.
Atul has a heartfelt message for other students from humble backgrounds.
“If my journey can inspire even one student to believe in themselves and not give up, then I’ve already achieved something great.”
This is more than a story of academic success but a reminder that with courage, support and determination, even the most distant dreams can come true.
