WHEN WAS THE FIRST WORLD DRUG DAY CELEBRATED?

The UN General Assembly declared 26 June to be the International Day against Drug Addiction and Illicit Trafficking on 7 December 1987 as an image of its resolve to step up work and work together with other nations to establish a world free of drug addiction. This international observance, which is supported every year by people, communities, and different organizations around the world, tries to increase public awareness of the serious issue that illicit drugs bring to society.

WHY IS THIS DAY IMPORTANT?

Since 1989, it has been observed on June 26 every year. On June 25, 1839, right before the First Opium War in China, Lin Zexu destroyed the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong. This event is honoured on June 26. That is why this day is called World Drug Day.
