On 21st February 1952, Shaheed Minar Martyr Monument was established to commemorate those killed during the Bengali Language Movement demonstrations.Bengali language movement started in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) in 1956 demanding official status of Bengali Language in the Pakistan Dominion.This language movement rose and took shape of Bangladesh Liberation War where East Pakistan Bengali nationalists demanded a separate country for the Bengalis.21st February is called the Language Movement Day as this movement is consider to be one of the pioneer of liberating a province on the basis of language.Every year United Nations celebrates this day as the International Mother Language Day.
