Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and former Governor of Rajasthan, Mr. Kalyan Singh passed away this evening in Lucknow at the age of 89. He was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) during the month of July where he was considered to have gotten well, however, a month after that, he met with his unfortunate demise. Kalyan Singh’s Birth and EducationTejpal Singh Lodhi and Sita Devi gave birth to Kalyan Singh on January 5, 1932 in Atrauli, United Provinces, British India. He is 8th pass to B.A., L.T. and he was educated at D.S. Degree College in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Kalyan Singh’s Political Career· Kalyan Singh was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1967 and held the position till 1980.· During Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's National Emergency, Kalyan Singh was imprisoned for 21 months.· The BJP won the Assembly Elections in June 1991, and Kalyan Singh was elected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. On the eve of the Babri Masjid's destruction on December 6, 1992, he resigned as Chief Minister.· He ran for two Assembly constituencies in November 1993, Atrauli and Kasganj, and won both. Despite the fact that the BJP received the most votes and improved its vote percentage, he served as Leader of the Opposition.· He was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from September 1997 until November 1999. His administration mandated that all elementary schools begin the day with a devotion to Bharat Mata, and that Vande Mataram be used instead of 'Yes Sir' during role calls.· His administration dropped charges against people involved in the Ram Janmabhoomi agitation in February 1998. He said that “Ram temple will be constructed at the same site if the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power at the centre.” He also stated that if BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected Prime Minister of India, the state of Uttarakhand will be created within 90 days.· He left the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1999 due to disputes with the party and founded the Rashtriya Kranti Party. In 2004, he rejoined the BJP and merged his party at the invitation of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In the same year, he ran for the Lok Sabha from Bulandshahr on a BJP ticket.· He left the BJP again on January 20, 2009, and ran as an independent candidate for the Etah Lok Sabha constituency, which he won. In the same year, he joined the Samajwadi Party and campaigned for the party in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Rajveer Singh, his son, has also joined the party.· Mulayam Singh Yadav blamed the SP's dismal performance in the Firozabad Lok Sabha by-election on the loss of Muslim support owing to Kalyan Singh on November 14, 2009.· He departed from the Samajwadi Party in 2010 and established the Jan Kranti Party on January 5, 2010. On January 21, 2013, the party was dissolved.· In 2013, he returned to the BJP. He was sworn in as Governor of Rajasthan on September 4, 2014, and served till September 8, 2019.· He was sworn in as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh (Additional Charge) on January 28, 2015, and served till August 12, 2015. Kalyan Singh’s role in the demolition of Babri Masjid· According to the charge sheet filed by the CBI, shortly after becoming Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Kalyan Singh travelled to Ayodhya with his colleagues and pledged to build the Ram Mandir there.· Singh led the Uttar Pradesh government in acquiring 2,77 acres of land around the Babri Masjid site to boost tourism on October 1, 1991.· The Sangh Parivar laid a 10-foot-thick layer of reinforced cement concrete for performing bhajans in July 1992. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), on the other hand, declared it to be the foundation for Ram Mandir.Kalyan Singh’s Personal Life· In 1952, Kalyan Singh married Ramwati Devi.· The couple gave birth to a son (Rajveer Singh) and a daughter (Prabha Verma).(Written by Aashish Shrivastava)
