Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s knack for breaking records continued on Wednesday evening when he walked out to bat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 Eliminator in New Chandigarh. Smashing seven maximums in the first four overs of the innings, the 15-year-old shattered Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a single IPL season.
The ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle had hit 59 sixes in IPL 2012 while representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Sooryavanshi went past that mark, smashing 65 sixes in the IPL 2026 so far. Eventually, he became the first Indian batter to hit 60 or more sixes in a single IPL season.
Sooryavanshi now also holds the record for most sixes in a single edition of a T20 tournament, played across the world. The second batter on the list is Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 43 sixes in the IPL 2024.
Soon after reaching the milestone, off Sakib Hussain, Sooryavanshi launched another over deep midwicket to bring up a 16-ball fifty.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins won the toss on Wednesday and chose to bowl against Rajasthan Royals in the IPL Eliminator. The winner of the clash will take on the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 at the same venue on May 29.
Rajasthan Royals received a boost with regular skipper Riyan Parag returning after recovering from a brief hamstring injury. At the same time, senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was also included in the playing XI. Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, brought Praful Hinge back into the side.
