Debutant Gyaneshwari Yadav produced a display of clinical composure and technical authority on Monday to secure silver in the women's 53kg category, continuing India's formidable weightlifting campaign at the Commonwealth Games.
The 23-year-old from Chhattisgarh delivered a career-best overall lift of 199kg, pushing Nigeria's Onome Omolola Didih to the limit in a absorbing duel for gold. Didih ultimately claimed top spot with a Commonwealth Games record total of 206kg, while Canada's Rebeka Groulx took bronze well adrift on 178kg.
Gyaneshwari Yadav's triumph opened India's medal account on Day Three and represented the country's fourth weightlifting medal of the Games. Her success follows a stellar opening Sunday that yielded gold for Mirabai Chanu alongside silver medals for Rishikanta Singh and Tamil Nadu's Muthupandi Raja.
Unfazed by the magnitude of her Commonwealth debut, Gyaneshwari Yadav went toe-to-toe with Didih in a contest where the pair operated in a tier of their own. The Indian equalled her personal best in the snatch with an immaculate 88kg effort, leaving her well clear of the chasing field at the interval.
It was in the clean and jerk, however, where Gyaneshwari Yadav demonstrated the remarkable tactical maturity that has marked her rise through the national ranks. Opening with 103kg, she executed a seamless progression through 107kg before hoisting a lifetime best of 111kg on her final attempt – improving her previous personal mark in the discipline by six kilograms.
Each successful lift temporarily set new Commonwealth Games records, forcing Didih to respond with a final Games and Area record lift of 113kg to secure gold.
Sporting an unshakeable smile throughout the high-stakes exchange, Gyaneshwari Yadav's podium finish caps a methodical trajectory from domestic phenom to international elite. Trained at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NS NIS) in Patiala, she first announced her potential on the global stage by winning silver at the 2022 IWF Junior World Championships in Greece.
More recently, Gynaneshwari Yadav proved her senior pedigree at the 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar, where she claimed snatch silver and overall bronze with a 194kg total. That performance earned her the top rank among eligible Commonwealth lifters heading into Glasgow.
An Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Chhattisgarh Police and a recipient of the state's prestigious Gundadhur Samman, Gyaneshwari Yadav's performance in Scotland firmly establishes her as one of the standout figures in Indian sport heading into the remainder of the Olympic cycle.
