R Ashwin IPL Retirement News: Legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who played nine matches in IPL 2025 for Chennai Super Kings, took to X on Wednesday (August 27) to confirm his retirement from the cash-rich league.

“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me #cricketforlife," Ashwin tweeted.

Ashwin made his debut in the IPL during the second season (in 2009) and since then has played a total of 221 matches for five teams – Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.

In 221 IPL matches, Ashwin picked up 187 wickets and scored 833 runs with an average of 13.01.

Only four bowlers – Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla – have picked up more wickets in the world’s richest franchise cricket league than the 38-year-old cricketer from Chennai.

Ashwin is the seventh most capped player in the IPL, and in the world’s richest franchise cricket league, he also captained Punjab Kings in 28 matches from 2018 to 2019 but was only able to win 12 fixtures.

Ashwin won two IPL titles for CSK under MS Dhoni’s leadership in 2010 and 2011 and finished as runners-up six times with three teams.

In addition to two IPL titles with CSK, Ashwin won two Champions League titles as well for the Chennai-based franchise.
