The White House has sparked debate online after it shared a Ghibli-styled meme of convicted drug dealer Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, who was arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The post, shared without a caption on X, was a response to a previous White House update on X about her detention.

According to reports, Basora-Gonzalez, 36, was convicted of fentanyl trafficking and deported. However, she re-entered the US illegally and was later arrested outside a restaurant in Philadelphia, where she allegedly worked as a cook. ICE confirmed the arrest and said that her case was a step in the direction of public safety.

Take a look at the meme post here:

Social media users had mixed reactions to the meme. While several users found it shocking that an official government account was engaging in trends, others defended the approach.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Philadelphia acting Field Office Director Brain McShane said that the arrest was part of a broader effort to remove people engaged in serious illegal activities. The White House, however, has yet to comment on its unconventional approach to sharing the news.
