

A discarded upper stage of India's LVM3 rocket has re-entered Earth's atmosphere safely nearly nine months after its launch, in what the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) said demonstrates how comprehensive mission planning can help reduce the amount of space debris left behind.
The C25 upper stage of the LVM3-M5 rocket re-entered the atmosphere on July 30, 2026, after spending nearly nine months in orbit, Isro confirmed.
The rocket had launched the CMS-03 communication satellite from Sriharikota on November 2, 2025, successfully placing it in its intended geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).
After deploying the satellite, the C25 upper stage no longer had a role to play.
Isro had passivated the stage, which is a process that reduces the possibility of an accidental breakup, and left it in a highly elliptical orbit inclined at 21 degrees.
The stage was then tracked by the US Space Command and monitored by Isro's System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM).
The Multi Object Tracking Radar at Sriharikota also tracked it whenever possible during its final orbits.
Isro estimated the most likely re-entry time at 5:38 pm IST on July 30, with the stage expected to fall over the Atlantic Ocean.
During re-entry, the intense heat generated by the stage's plunge through the atmosphere was expected to destroy most of it.
Only components made from materials with very high melting points, such as gas bottles, the nozzle and tanks, were the only ones expected to survive.
A rocket stage does not necessarily fall back to Earth immediately after completing its job.
Depending on its orbit and launch timing, it can remain in space for months, years or even decades.
For the LVM3-M5 mission, Isro had estimated before launch that the C25 stage would remain in orbit for less than a year. Its actual orbital lifetime was also under nine months, broadly matching the prediction.
Isro said this meets the international 25-year guideline for limiting the post-mission lifetime of objects in low Earth orbit and also India's stricter Debris Free Space Mission requirement, which recommends limiting the lifetime of rocket stages that pass through heavily populated low Earth orbit to five years.
The short lifetime was achieved through mission planning, Isro said, highlighting an increasingly important goal as the number of objects around Earth continues to grow.
