ISRO Moon Mission: Chandrayaan 3 Launch Successful, All Eyes Now On Soft Landing

As the clock ticks for ISRO’s high-profile launch of the year, the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, all eyes are on the country’s space agency whose scientists are keen to taste success with a soft landing on lunar surface and put the country in an elite club of nations that have accomplished the challenging task.

‘Fat boy’ LVM3-M4 rocket will carry Chandrayaan-3 on Friday as part of the country’s ambitious moon mission. The Indian Space Research Organisation will be launching the hugely anticipated mission from this spaceport at 2.35 pm on Friday. The soft landing on moon’s surface is planned for late August.

Chandrayaan-2 failed to achieve the desired soft landing on the moon surface in 2019, leaving the ISRO team dejected. Images of an emotional then ISRO chief K Sivan being consoled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was present to achieve the rare feat, remains vivid in the memory of many.

Akshay Kumar, who starred in Mission Mangal in 2019, which was based on true events of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launching the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), making it the least expensive mission to Mars, took to Twitter to wish the team his best. “And the time has come to rise! Great luck to all our scientists at @isro for #Chandrayaan3. A billion hearts are praying for you,” he wrote.

For travel into space, Chandrayaan-3 launch vehicle, the LVM 3, has successfully been integrated with the moon mission. The magnet stepper motor is used in the actuator assembly of the LVM 3 for controlling the rocket engine’s liquid fuel and oxidizer mixture ratio.

“We are privileged to contribute to ISRO’s moon mission through R&D work at the Sona College of Technology. The research team is committed to supporting ISRO’s future space missions too,” said professor N Kannan, Head, SonaSPEED, Sona College of Technology.

According to Chocko Valliappa, CEO, Vee Technologies, the technology firm that was entrusted with manufacturing and quality assurance of the motors by SonaSPEED, “successful integration of stepper motor in the Chandrayaan-3 launch vehicle is a tribute to the supremacy of India’s engineering talent in indigenising ISRO’s pathbreaking missions”.

This time extra fueling is there on the lander so that the lander can revolve for some more time.

If due to some problems the landing location of the lander needs to be changed, it can be changed with that extra fuel.

Chandrayaan 3 will land at the South Pole of the moon, a thing which is not yet achieved by any other country who are involved in any-kind of a moon mission.

This will help the Lander to generate energy from the sun-rays during its travel to the surface of moon.

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) high-profile mission of the year, the Chandrayaan-3 launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota at 2.35 pm on Friday.

Chandrayaan-3 is equipped with a lander, a rover, and a propulsion module. It weighs around 3,900 kilograms.

Addressing a press conference after the launch of Chandrayaan-3, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said, “This is a moment of glory for us, moment of glory for India and moment of destiny for all of us. I must thank team ISRO for making India proud. I also thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making this possible by unlocking the doors of Sriharikota and enabling India’s space sector.”
