In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the systemic bias in the evaluation of women Short Service Commission (SSC) officers and held that they are entitled to Permanent Commission.

Invoking its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to ensure “complete justice," the court ruled that the denial of Permanent Commission (PC) to women officers was rooted in discrimination embedded within the evaluation framework.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant ruled that the ceiling of 250 women officers per year for Permanent Commission is arbitrary and cannot be treated as sacrosanct.
