A reference to judicial corruption in a Class 8 textbook has drawn the Prime Minister’s attention, with Narendra Modi expressing displeasure during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, sources said.
According to sources, the Prime Minister objected to the inclusion of a corruption case involving the judiciary in material meant for middle school students, questioning both the suitability of the subject and the process that cleared it.
“What are we teaching Class 8 children about judicial corruption?” the Prime Minister asked during the meeting, sources said.
The Prime Minister also raised concerns over oversight, asking who was monitoring and approving such content before it reached classrooms. His remarks reflected unease over how sensitive institutional issues were being introduced at an early stage of schooling.
Sources said the textbook includes a case related to corruption in the judiciary, which has now come under scrutiny within the government. The issue has prompted questions about age appropriateness and the safeguards in place during the preparation and vetting of school textbooks.
There was no immediate official response on whether the content will be revised or withdrawn. However, the matter is expected to be taken up by the authorities concerned, with a focus on accountability and the mechanisms governing textbook approvals.
