A day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public meeting, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday appointed senior IPS officer Satish Golcha as the new Delhi Police Commissioner.

According to the MHA’s notification dated August 21, Golcha will assume office with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.

“With the approval of the competent authority, Satish Golcha, presently posted as DG (Prisons), Delhi, is hereby appointed to the post of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders," the notification stated.

Who Is Satish Golcha?

Golcha, an IPS officer of the 1992 batch, is currently posted as Director General (Prisons), Delhi.

He will replace the incumbent SBK Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer and Director General of Home Guards, who was given the additional charge by the MHA on August 1.

Golcha is known in bureaucratic circles for his diverse skill set and a strong command of headquarters operations.

Rekha Gupta Attacked

The new appointment came just a day after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public grievance hearing on Wednesday morning at her residence in Civil Lines in the national capital. The incident occurred during CM Gupta’s weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’ at her residence, where citizens come to present grievances.

The attacker, identified as Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya, was standing in a queue to meet the Chief Minister and had nearly five people before him. He suddenly breached the queue and approached Gupta with the documents he was carrying.

Sakriya first slapped her, it was known, after which she stumbled against a wall. The accused then grabbed the Chief Minister by her hair, sources informed.

Soon after, the accused was taken over by the Chief Minister’s security staff and others present at the location.

The police also registered an attempt to murder case against the accused for attacking the Delhi Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has taken over Gupta’s security, with Z-category security now in place.

According to sources, the process of transition from the Delhi Police to the CRPF was underway earlier today.

Once the arrangement is finalised, the Delhi Police will continue to manage the outer perimeter of the Chief Minister’s residence, while the CRPF will directly handle her personal and area-specific security.

Officials confirmed that area-specific security arrangements have been designed to ensure round-the-clock protection for Gupta.
