Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on lawmakers to make sure law and regulations serve the people, not burden them, in remarks that are significant amid the ongoing meltdown at IndiGo airlines.

"Ensure that people do not face any trouble on account of the government. Rules and regulations are well and good, but they should be made to improve the system and not to harass the public," said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, recounting the PM’s words at a Wednesday meeting with MPs from the ruling National Democratic Alliance.

"Prime Minister Modi has said in very clear words that there should not be any such law or rule which unnecessarily troubles the common citizens. This should not happen. Laws should not be a burden on the people, but for their convenience," added Rijiju.

The PM’s remarks carry weight as IndiGo has been rocked by a week-long bout of operational chaos. For seven consecutive days, the airline has cancelled or delayed hundreds of flights, stranding thousands of passengers and triggering fierce criticism of both corporate and regulatory oversight.

With mounting pressure, the government has called a high-level meeting, bringing together the civil aviation ministry, industry stakeholders and airline operators to address the crisis.
