A shocking incident took place during virtual court proceedings at the Delhi High Court, where obscene pornographic content was played repeatedly in the Chief Justice’s courtroom.

What we know about the incident?

The incident occurred while the bench was conducting hearings through video conferencing (VC). According to reports, the disruption happened multiple times, causing immediate concern during the session.

The virtual hearing had to be stopped not once, but twice due to the incident. Each time the objectionable content appeared, the VC system was shut down to restore order.

After the first disruption, the system was restarted and proceedings resumed. However, when the content was played again, the authorities decided to shut down the VC system completely. It has not been reopened since the second interruption.

The situation took a more serious turn when the account playing the video reportedly displayed a message saying, “You’ve been hacked".

An automated voice was also heard making the same announcement during the disruption, raising concerns about a possible cyber attack targeting the Delhi High Court’s video conferencing interface.

As reported by LiveLaw, the incident was caused by a random user who logged into the virtual hearing. The individual reportedly shared their screen and played pornographic material while the court was in session.

The videos were said to have been played from accounts identified as Sridhar Sarnobat and Shitjeet Sighn.

Action taken

Following the repeated disruptions, the VC systems were taken down immediately to prevent further misuse. The incident has raised serious concerns about the security and access controls of virtual court proceedings.

The unusual and disruptive nature of the event has drawn attention to the risks associated with online hearings, especially when unauthorised users are able to gain access.

After the second disruption, the virtual court session was shut down and has not yet been restarted. It remains unclear when the VC system will be restored following the incident.
