Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park in Delhi on Friday to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
PM Modi was seen listening to devotional songs during the event and joining in by clapping and playing a tambourine. He also waved to the gathering as he arrived at the venue.
‘Bhajan Clubbing’ is a format of devotional music events that brings together large groups, particularly young people, in a concert-like setting. The trend blends traditional bhajans with a modern event format.
PM Modi had praised the trend during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast in January this year, describing bhajan-clubbing as a blend of devotion, culture, spirituality and modernity that had found resonance among Gen Z.
He said such gatherings, where young people come together to sing bhajans and devotional songs, were “no less than global concerts”. PM Modi had also described the trend as an effort to combine spirituality with modernity while preserving the sanctity of bhajans.
Deendayal Upadhyaya, a key Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader, is associated with the philosophy of Antyodaya, which focuses on the welfare and upliftment of the poorest and most marginalised sections of society.
