A 20-year-old nursing student was allegedly sexually assaulted in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri. She was found unconscious and severely injured near Champak Ground. She has been shifted to the district hospital for treatment.

According to the hospital sources, the victim sustained multiple injuries, raising suspicions of a brutal sexual assault or rape.

This incident has sparked an outcry among the nursing community in Ratnagiri. Nurses and hospital staff staged protests outside the hospital, demanding the death penalty for those responsible for the crime.

The protests escalated as the hospital staff, along with other supporters, took to the streets, blocking traffic in several parts of Ratnagiri. The demonstrators held banners and chanted slogans, calling for immediate action against the culprits. The situation has created significant disruption in the city, with authorities urging peace while assuring that the investigation is being prioritised.

The police have filed a case and launched a probe, with efforts to identify and arrest the culprits. As the investigation unfolds, the incident has become a flashpoint for discussions on women’s safety in the region, with many calling for stronger protective measures and harsher penalties for those who commit such crimes.

The incident comes to light amid nationwide protests demanding justice for a 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered on August 9 at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Healthcare professionals are also calling for stronger security laws, citing concerns over their safety during late shifts.
