Chandru Lamani, BJP MLA from Karnataka’s Shirahatti Assembly constituency, has been arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta after he was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. The amount was part of an alleged total demand of Rs 11 lakh.

Officials said Lamani was first detained for questioning following a trap operation and was formally arrested thereafter. Two of his personal assistants were also taken into custody in connection with the case.

According to Lokayukta officials, the bribe was allegedly sought to facilitate approvals related to a minor irrigation department project in Gadag district.

The work involved the construction of a retaining wall along both sides of a road, which had been assigned to a contractor.

The complainant, Vijay Pujar, a Class-1 contractor from Gadag, approached the anti-corruption authorities after he was allegedly asked to pay Rs 11 lakh to secure necessary clearances for the project.

After verifying the complaint, the Lokayukta police laid a trap on Saturday. During the operation, Lamani was allegedly caught accepting Rs 5 lakh, part of the demanded amount.

The action was carried out by a team from the Lokayukta Police under the supervision of senior officers.

Officials said the operation was conducted following due procedure and under the guidance of higher authorities to ensure legal compliance.

TWO OTHERS DETAINED AT THE SCENE

Apart from the MLA, his two aides — Manjunath Valmiki and Gurunaik — were also detained at the scene and later secured for further investigation.

Authorities suspect their involvement in facilitating the alleged transaction. All three are currently being questioned as investigators gather evidence and record statements.

The case has been registered under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Lokayukta officials confirmed that material evidence was seized during the trap and that further investigation is underway to establish the full extent of the alleged wrongdoing.

The arrest marks a significant development in Karnataka’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts.

The Lokayukta has reiterated its commitment to pursuing the case as per law and ensuring accountability in public office.
