An Indian Army personnel was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Basantgarh area of Udhampur district, two days after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The soldier was injured in the initial exchange and later succumbed to his injures.

The encounter took place hours after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists — 25 Indians and one Nepali — were killed and several were injured after a group of terrorists linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) opened fire at a popular tourist destination in Baisaran valley in southern Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

In addition to this, the Indian Army troops deployed at a forward post in Mendhar, Poonch, also reportedly opened fire on Wednesday night after detecting suspicious movement along the Line of Control (LoC). Defence sources informed that the movement was challenged by a sentry on duty, prompting immediate action to prevent any potential infiltration attempt.

The Indian army on Wednesday also foiled terrorists’ bid to cross the Line of Control in Baramulla district. At least two terrorists were killed in the encounter, the army informed, adding that they recovered two assault rifles, ammunition and other war-like stores from the terrorists. Additionally, pistols and rounds of bullets have been received and one IED was also retrieved.
