The earthquake, recorded at 12:50 pm local time, was felt far away, with several places in India, China, Thailand, and Bangladesh experiencing strong aftershocks. The epicentre was located 16 kilometres northwest of the Burmese city of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Several videos captured terrifying visuals of people running out of buildings and shopping malls in panic as the structures shook violently.

As the tremors were felt 900 kilometres away in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared a state of emergency following a meeting to assess the damage caused by the powerful quakes.
