Delhi Education Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Thursday directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to immediately withdraw transfer orders for 5,000 government teachers.

A circular titled 'Online requests for transfer of teaching staff of the Directorate of Education' was issued by the Education Department on June 11 which directed all teachers who have served for more than 10 years in one school to compulsorily apply for a transfer.

The order stated that those who would fail to apply would be transferred to any school by the Education Department.

Atish had then ordered on July 1 that no teacher should be transferred solely because they have spent more than 10 years in a particular school.

Addressing a press conference earlier in the day, the AAP leader said she has learnt that there has been corruption in the matter.

"Contrary to my orders, a transfer order was issued on July 2 transferring nearly 5,000 teachers. I have directed the Chief Secretary to withdraw this order. I have also asked him to conduct an inquiry if there has been any corruption or malpractice," she said.

"This order is absolutely wrong and anti-education. Due to the hard work of these teachers, the children of Delhi government schools are going to IITs. They are qualifying for JEE-NEET. It is because of them that the results of Delhi government schools are coming out better than private schools," Atishi added.

Meanwhile, the ruling AAP has slammed the BJP for its alleged attempts to dismantle Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's acclaimed education model in the capital.

Senior AAP leader and MLA Dilip Pandey pointed out that the ruling BJP at the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena are orchestrating the transfer of more than 5,000 teachers from Delhi government schools in a bid to cripple the city's education system.
