Just a day after resigning from Congress, Assam Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia.
The development came after Bordoloi on Tuesday tendered his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, ending his lifelong association with the party amid allegations of internal mistreatment.
In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bordoloi said, “With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress."
Bordoloi’s exit from Congress is set to give a major blow to the party in the upcoming state Assembly elections, scheduled to take place on April 9. Earlier, Congress’s former state president Bhupen Kumar Borah also quit the party and joined the BJP, leaving the party in a big turmoil ahead of the crucial polls.
While speaking to the reporters, Bordoloi responded to his resignation and accused the Congress party of insulting him on multiple issues.
“Today, I have abandoned one of the most important principles of my life, and I am not happy with it. However, I made this decision because I was being insulted on many issues by anyone who approached me from within the Congress Party, especially in the Assam Congress," Bordoloi said.
“Even the Congress leadership was not showing sympathy towards me. I have become very lonely because I have been associated with the Congress all my life. But of late, I have been having a lot of difficulty surviving, so I have to make this decision," he added.
Assam is set to go to the polls on April 9, 2026, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026.
The contest for the 126-member Assam legislative assembly is expected to revolve around the BJP-led alliance and a Congress-led opposition bloc that is still trying to consolidate support.
