The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail of actor Darshan in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case, stating that granting bail in such a “serious case" risks influence by the accused. Following the cancellation, the actor was arrested in Bengaluru.
The judgment was pronounced by a bench headed by Justice JB Pardiwala, setting aside an earlier Karnataka High Court ruling. The top court has also ordered Darshan’s immediate arrest.
Delivering its verdict, the apex court noted that the High Court order reflects mechanical exercise. “The day we come to know that the accused is provided a five-star treatment, the first step would be to suspend the jail superintendent," the SC bench stated.
The top court’s decision came after the Karnataka government submitted a written argument to the Supreme Court to cancel the bail of actor Darshan and other accused in the Renukaswamy murder case.
The submission of the Karnataka government highlighted several key points to prove Darshan’s alleged involvement and argues that the High Court’s decision to grant bail was flawed.
The state’s case includes forensic evidence, such as soil samples on the accused’s footwear matching the crime scene and Renukaswamy’s blood on their clothes.
Renukaswamy, 33, died of a “shock haemorrhage" due to multiple blunt injuries, his autopsy report had said. Darshan was initially arrested in the case, but was granted bail by the Karnataka High Court last December.
