
Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Punjab’s Ludhiana West constituency Gurpreet Gogi was found dead with bullet injuries to his head on Friday night, officials said.
According to his family members, he was alone in his room at around 11.30 pm when he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his pistol, the police said on Saturday.
The MLA was rushed to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The police said that the actual cause behind his death will be ascertained after the autopsy.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann offered condolences to the family.
“Received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our respected MLA Gurpreet Gogi Ji from Ludhiana West. It is truly saddening to hear this news; Gogi Ji was a very kind-hearted person. During this time of grief, our deepest condolences are with his family. May God bless the departed soul and provide strength and courage to the family and loved ones to bear this loss," Mann posted on X.
Gogi joined the AAP in 2022 and won the Ludhiana (West) assembly constituency by 7,500 votes, defeating former Punjab minister and sitting MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
On Friday, he had attended a Lohri function along with Assembly Speaker Kultar Sandhwan at the Ludhiana Bar Association.
