Video: Toddler dies as school bus runs over him in Mumbai, grandmother critical

The incident occurred when the grandmother was crossing the road in front of the bus after picking up her granddaughter.

A one-year-old boy was killed, and his grandmother critically injured after a school bus allegedly ran them over in Mumbai’s Girgaon area on Tuesday afternoon, police said. The incident, caught on CCTV, occurred around 12.15 pm in the Khetwadi area, where a school bus had stopped to drop off students.

According to police, Chandrakala Shivram Vyas (63), a local resident, had come to pick up her granddaughter from the school bus and was holding her grandson, Avir Vyas, in her arms.

After the granddaughter got down from the bus, Vyas was crossing the road from in front of the vehicle when the driver allegedly moved the bus forward suddenly. The bus hit the woman and the child, leaving both seriously injured.

They were rushed to Reliance Hospital in Girgaon for treatment, where doctors declared the toddler dead on arrival. The grandmother remains hospitalised and is undergoing treatment.

A CCTV video of the incident has surfaced and is being investigated, police said. The bus driver has been detained, and a case registered in connection with the incident. Further investigation is being carried out by the DB Marg police.
