At least 28 people were rescued after they were stuck for about half an hour dangling upside down high on a ride at a century-old amusement park in Oregon's Portland city, in the United States.

The incident happened on Friday evening, on the park's first day of opening for the summer.

The ride was later manually lowered after emergency crews pressed into service, after which all riders were evacuated and sent for medical tests.

According to a statement by the authorities at the amusement park, the emergency crew arrived nearly 25 minutes after a call was made to them, The Associated Press reported.

There were no reports of any injuries in the incident. However, one rider with a pre-existing medical condition was taken to a hospital for further evaluation as a precaution.

A video widely shared on social media showed the ride, with multiple riders in the air.

The ride, called AtmosFEAR, operates like a pendulum, with the capacity to swing riders completely upside down.

The ride has been operational since 2021 and has not had any prior incidents, the park statement read. It will remain closed until further notice.

Authorities at the park also said they would work with the ride's manufacturer and state inspectors to determine the cause of the stoppage, AP reported.
