The brazen murder of the 50-year-old executive, which police called a targeted killing, has gripped the city and sparked a frenzy among amateur social media sleuths and true-crime enthusiasts about the suspect’s motives and how he has seemingly vanished into thin air. Authorities are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
With over 36 hours elapsed since the fatal shooting, here’s what we know about the suspect:
The suspect had checked into the HI New York City Hostel using a fake New Jersey driver’s licence days before the murder, CNN reported, citing law enforcement sources. A key breakthrough came from a surveillance photo captured at the hostel, which briefly shows the man’s face after he lowered his mask while flirting with a receptionist.
The photo, in which the suspect is smiling with a black mask hanging from his chin, has become central to the investigation. CCTV footage from the hostel shows him wearing the same hoodie and gray backpack seen on the gunman who calmly executed Thompson outside the Hilton Midtown hotel.
Investigators recovered critical evidence near the crime scene, including a water bottle and a protein bar wrapper discarded by the suspect. While a fingerprint lifted from the bottle was smudged, the items may still yield DNA.
Video from a nearby Starbucks shows the suspect purchasing the items shortly before the shooting.
According to CBS News, a burner phone left behind in the alleyway at the scene of the shooting may hold digital breadcrumbs. The phone has so far resisted attempts to unlock it. Experts believe it could provide vital insights into the shooter’s communications and movements.
Investigators found 9 mm shell casings at the scene marked with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” in permanent marker.
The phrase echoes the criticism of health insurers’ tactics to avoid paying claims, raising questions about whether Thompson’s role in healthcare made him a specific target, and the suspect’s possible motive tied to industry grievances.
According to CNN, the suspect was captured on video leaving the 57th Street F train station before the shooting. He was seen "lying in wait" for Thompson outside the Hilton Midtown shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday.
After shooting Thompson, the gunman crossed the street, fled through an alleyway, and got on an electric bike on 55th Street before heading north on 6th Avenue toward Central Park, where he was last seen at 6:48 a.m.
Investigators tracked his movements to the Upper West Side, where he was last seen carrying an electric bike battery.
