In a village in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, a stray dog named Kali became a symbol of extraordinary courage. Around 8:30 am on Monday, over 30 kindergarten students of Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir were sitting outside their school when a venomous snake slithered dangerously close.
Sensing the threat, Kali sprang into action without hesitation. She intercepted the snake before it could reach the children, engaging it in a fierce and desperate fight. Though the snake struck her repeatedly, Kali refused to retreat. In the end, she managed to kill it, ensuring every child was safe.
But the battle came at a cost. Bitten on the mouth during the struggle, Kali later succumbed to the venom.
News of her death left the village heartbroken. Loved by all, Kali was given a ceremonial farewell—her body placed on a trolley, adorned with flowers and covered in white cloth, as villagers carried her in a procession before burial.
“Kali saved our children,” they said. “She will remain immortal in our hearts.”
