A 20-year-old engineering student of a University in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room late on Saturday night. The deceased has been identified as Princy Kumari, a resident of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. She was pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science, second year, and was living in the university hostel located near Punjipathra.
According to police, the student allegedly died by suicide by hanging in her hostel room on Saturday night. The matter came to light after hostel authorities were alerted. Police reached the spot, conducted inquest proceedings, and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family.
Initial information suggests that the student was under academic stress, as she was required to appear for second-year examinations along with first-year backlog papers. Police have recovered a suicide note from the room and are examining its contents as part of the investigation.
Police said the exact cause of death would be confirmed after the post-mortem report. Statements of hostel residents and university staff are also being recorded.
According to sources, Princy’s family tried calling her repeatedly around 8.30 pm on Saturday, but her phone remained unanswered. Fearing something was wrong, the family contacted the hostel warden. When the warden reached the room, the door was locked from inside. Despite repeated knocks, there was no response. The warden then looked through a window and found the student hanging.
Police said a suicide note recovered from the room states that the student felt she could not meet her parents’ expectations and was distressed about her academic performance and financial burden on the family. In the note, she reportedly apologises to her parents and says ‘Sorry Mummy Papa, I couldn’t meet your expectations,” and expresses guilt over using their savings for her education.
Family members said Princy had backlogs in five subjects in her first semester and was preparing for re-examinations. They also stated that she had recently requested around Rs 1 lakh in instalments towards semester fees.
Police said further investigation is underway.
