A wave of shock and fear has spread in Chorkata village of Jharkhand’s Dumka district after an elderly couple was found brutally murdered inside their home with their throats slit. Police said that the victims have been identified as Nav Gopal Saha (62) and his wife Bimu Bala Saha (58).

The discovery was made late on Wednesday night by the couple’s son who had returned home and found the main entrance locked. Suspecting something unusual, he entered through a side door and was horrified to see his parents lying in a pool of blood. He immediately raised an alarm and informed police.

A team from Mufassil Police Station reached the scene around 9 pm and secured the area. According to Superintendent of Police Pitambar Singh Kherwar, initial investigations suggest that sharp-edged weapons were used to kill the couple. However, the exact motive behind the murders remains unclear.

“We have requested experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Ranchi to examine the site. Only after their inspection will the bodies be sent for post-mortem. At this stage, it would be premature to comment on the motive or the type of weapons used,” SP Kherwar told reporters.

Locals in Chorkata village stated that the Sahas were last seen on Tuesday evening, suggesting that the murders might have taken place late that night or in the early hours of Wednesday. Residents expressed outrage and shock at the incident calling it both “brutal and mysterious.”

Station House Officer Satyam Kumar of Mufassil Police Station added that no signs of robbery have been found so far. “The family members have not reported any theft of valuables or household items. The investigation will cover all possible angles, including personal enmity and other disputes,” he said.

The news of the double murder has deeply unsettled villagers. Many demanded that police act swiftly to track down those responsible, fearing the crime could disturb the peace of the region. Police officials assured that a thorough probe is underway and further details will be shared after forensic findings and the post-mortem.
