Himachal Pradesh continues to suffer under the impact of a severe monsoon, which has paralyzed essential public services and led to widespread devastation across the state. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the situation has turned critical, with 125 lives lost since June 20 due to rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and road accidents caused by poor visibility and slippery conditions.
Infrastructure damage has reached alarming levels. As of 10:00 AM on Monday, 468 roads remain blocked, 676 water supply schemes are disrupted, and over 1,199 power transformers have been rendered non-functional. Even two national highways are currently inaccessible, complicating rescue operations and severely affecting public transport and logistical support.
The worst-hit districts include Mandi and Kangra. Mandi alone accounts for 310 road blockages and 390 transformer failures, while Kangra has reported the breakdown of 595 water supply schemes, causing significant distress to local residents. The continued downpour has not only overwhelmed the state's disaster response systems but also delayed the pace of restoration work.
On July 20 alone, six new fatalities were reported due to rain-related road mishaps — one in Hamirpur, two in Kangra, and three in Shimla. The relentless rainfall has also led to frequent landslides, leaving several villages cut off from essential services. Rescue and restoration efforts are underway, with teams from the Public Works Department, Jal Shakti, and the Power Department working round the clock to clear debris, restore electricity, and resume water supply.
Authorities have warned that the situation may deteriorate further, with forecasts indicating continued rainfall in the coming days. The SDMA has urged residents, especially those living in vulnerable terrains, to stay indoors and avoid any non-essential travel. Emergency response teams remain on high alert across the state, as roads continue to crumble and water bodies threaten to overflow. With crucial infrastructure crippled and monsoon activity showing no signs of slowing, Himachal Pradesh stands on the edge of an escalating crisis.
