US President Donald Trump on Friday congratulated Taranjit Singh Sandhu on his appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, highlighting his role in strengthening ties between India and the United States.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described Sandhu as a “seasoned diplomat” who has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to deepening bilateral relations. He also extended his best wishes for Sandhu’s new role, expressing confidence in his leadership as Delhi’s top administrator.
“Congratulations to Taranjit Sandhu on becoming the new Lt Governor of Delhi! As a seasoned diplomat and former Ambassador to the United States, he has always shown deep commitment to strengthening the US-India relationship,” Trump wrote, wishing him success in leading Delhi’s progress.
Sandhu, a former Indian Ambassador to the United States, played a key role during a crucial phase in India-US relations marked by increased strategic cooperation, defence partnerships and economic engagement. His tenure in Washington coincided with efforts by both countries to expand collaboration across sectors including technology, trade and security.
Trump’s message underscored Sandhu’s contribution to fostering closer ties between the two countries, a relationship that has gained momentum over the past decade amid shifting global dynamics. He also expressed optimism that Sandhu would continue contributing to international engagement in his new administrative role.
As Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Sandhu will oversee governance in the national capital, working alongside the elected government on key issues such as infrastructure, law and order, and urban development. His diplomatic background is widely seen as an asset in navigating complex administrative and policy challenges.
