The Delhi government has announced that no adverse legal action will be taken against people booked in connection with protests over the alleged NEET-UG question paper leak. The decision follows the Centre's assurance to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had led the demonstrations, and is in line with the Supreme Court's interim directions issued on July 28.
The government clarified that the relief would not apply to individuals with prior criminal records. It said those with "criminal antecedents" would remain subject to legal proceedings in accordance with the Supreme Court's directions.
The protests intensified on July 20 during the CJP's 'Chalo Sansad' march from Jantar Mantar, where clashes broke out between protesters and police. Following the demonstrations, Delhi Police registered multiple cases and made arrests based on CCTV footage and other evidence collected during the protests.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court directed authorities not to take coercive action against protesters without prior criminal records and ordered the release of eligible detainees. Separately, Parliament has passed amendments to the anti-paper leak law, introducing stricter penalties, including imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines of up to ₹10 crore for offences related to examination paper leaks.
