Mumbai: Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Patil, who recently defected from the Shiv Sena (UBT) to the Eknath Shinde-led faction, has triggered a political controversy after allegedly making threatening remarks against protesters and journalists. The incident led to criticism from the opposition, concern within the ruling alliance, and calls for police action.

According to reports, Patil allegedly told party workers that he would take strong action against those protesting outside his residence. He also reportedly used inflammatory language referring to past incidents involving his family, which drew sharp objections from opposition leaders.

The controversy escalated further when Patil was interacting with media personnel, where he reportedly reacted angrily to repeated questions about his political shift and allegedly threatened journalists during a confrontation. The remarks prompted condemnation from journalists’ groups and political opponents.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray criticised Patil’s statements, calling them unacceptable and demanding accountability. He also urged the MP to resign and contest elections independently if he was confident of public support.

Sanjay Raut also wrote to the Mumbai Police Commissioner seeking action against Patil, alleging that the statements amounted to threats and required investigation. He further demanded strict legal action based on the content of the remarks.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reportedly took note of the situation and asked Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde to counsel Patil, cautioning that such statements could damage the government’s image and invite legal consequences.

Later in the day, Patil issued an apology, stating that his remarks were made in anger and were unintended. He said he had been under political pressure and requested that his family not be dragged into political criticism. He also clarified that he respects the media but reacted in the heat of the moment.

Shinde, meanwhile, acknowledged the controversy and said he had spoken to Patil regarding his comments, adding that appropriate advice had been given. He also pointed to what he described as provocative political language used by opponents.

Police officials have not yet confirmed any formal case related to the statements, and further developments are awaited. The matter has intensified political tensions in Maharashtra, with both sides exchanging sharp accusations.
