Sir Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor who captivated audiences as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.
Neill passed away on July 13 in Sydney, Australia. His family announced the news in a statement, describing his death as “sudden and unexpected” while sharing that he had remained cancer-free following years of treatment for a rare form of blood cancer.

From ‘Jurassic Park’ to Global Stardom
Although Sam Neill built an acting career spanning more than five decades, he became a global icon after portraying paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993). He later reprised the role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).
Beyond dinosaurs, Neill earned critical acclaim for performances in films including:
The Piano
Dead Calm
The Hunt for Red October
Possession
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
He also appeared in popular television series such as Peaky Blinders, The Tudors and The Twelve.
His Battle With Cancer
In 2023, Neill revealed he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. After chemotherapy stopped working, he underwent CAR-T cell therapy and announced earlier this year that he was cancer-free.
Despite his health challenges, Neill continued acting, attending public events and regularly sharing updates from his vineyard in New Zealand.
Tributes Pour In
Tributes from across the world have begun pouring in following Neill’s death.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called him “one of the greats,” crediting him with helping take New Zealand cinema to global audiences.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remembered the actor for his humour, dignity and resilience, while actor Richard E. Grant described him as “an officer and a gentleman.”
A Legacy That Will Live On
From blockbuster franchises to award-winning dramas, Sam Neill’s versatility made him one of the most respected actors of his generation.
Whether audiences remember him as the fearless scientist outrunning dinosaurs or for his powerful performances in independent cinema, his work continues to inspire movie lovers across the world.
