
Delhi Weather Updates: Rain lashed the national capital and its nearby regions in the early hours of Sunday morning, bringing respite from soaring temperatures. The sudden downpour in Delhi coincides with the early arrival of the monsoon that reached the coastal state of Kerala on Saturday.
The overnight rain flooded major roads and caused long traffic snarls near ITO and Dhaula Kaun, a key stretch leading to the city’s Indira Gandhi Airport. Air traffic was affected too with around 49 Delhi-bound flights were diverted due to bad weather.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather forecasting agency, also issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, predicting more showers later in the day. In a late-evening Saturday advisory, the IMD had sounded a red alert for Delhi and adjoining areas, warning of strong thunderstorms, rain, and high-speed winds.
Rainy Week Ahead In Delhi
The maximum temperature in the national capital had been hovering around 46°C over the past few days. Even on Saturday, it settled at a sweltering 44°C. However, the sudden change in weather is expected to bring some relief, with temperatures likely to remain below 40°C and chances of rain and thunderstorms forecast until May 30.
Air Traffic Affected, 49 Diverted
As many as 49 flights were diverted between 11:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. due to adverse weather conditions, news agency ANI reported citing Delhi airport sources.
In an advisory earlier in the morning, the Delhi airport said, “Due to adverse weather conditions last night, some flights have been impacted. Passengers are advised to check their flight status regularly and stay in touch with airline staff for updates".
Roads Waterlogged, Vehicles Submerged, Traffic Affected
The rain brought a morning nightmare for commuters are main stretches of roads were inundated with water, slowing down their speed. Vehicles were seen submerged at several underpasses including the Minto bridge across the city.
The weather department urged residents to take necessary precautions and cautioned people to avoid open spaces and not to take shelter under trees.
Trees Uprooted In Delhi After Storms
Strong winds and heavy rainfall led to trees being uprooted at several locations across the national capital.
A visual shared by ANI showed clearance work in progress on Akbar Road, where multiple trees had fallen due to the overnight storm.
UP Cop Killed In Ghaziabad Roof Collapse
An Uttar Pradesh Police sub-inspector was killed after the roof of their Ghaziabad office collapsed due to a strong storm and rain last night.
Sub-Inspector Virendra Mishra, (58) was posted at office in Ghaziabad’s Ankur Vihar as the personal assistant to the Assistant Commission of Police (ACP).
