The Pakistan Army on Tuesday night resorted to unprovoked small arms fire at multiple locations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the sixth consecutive day of cross-border firing by Pakistani forces. The flare-up comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries following the Pahalgam attack, in which Pakistan-based terrorists killed 26 people.

The latest round of firing took place across the Naushera and Sunderbani sectors in Rajouri district, as well as the Akhnoor and Pargwal sectors in Jammu, and in Baramulla and Kupwara districts. Indian Army troops responded swiftly and in a calibrated manner, officials said.

Since the Pahalgam attack, cross-border firings by Pakistan have grown increasingly frequent, following a systematic pattern of provocation. On Monday night, multiple such incidents were reported from the Kupwara and Baramulla districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector.

April witnessed a marked escalation by Pakistan, with at least seven reported incidents along the Line of Control (LoC), raising concerns over cross-border hostilities. The month began with a mine blast on April 1 in the Krishna Ghati sector, allegedly intended to aid infiltration attempts. This was quickly followed by unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops, further heightening tensions along the border.

On the night of April 22-23, after the terror attack in Pahalgam, firings were reported in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. The following night, between April 24 and 25, fresh incidents of cross-border firing were reported in the Kupwara sector, adding to the growing list of violations.

The pattern continued into April 25-26, when firing was reported from 34 unconfirmed locations along the LoC, indicating a significant spike in hostile activity. Subsequently, on the night of April 26-27, two separate violations occurred in Kupwara district.

Amid growing calls for retaliation against Pakistan over its alleged support for cross-border terrorism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to assess the security situation. During the review, PM Modi asserted that the armed forces have "complete operational freedom" to determine the mode, targets, and timing of India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
