More than 20 devotees suffered burn injuries after firecrackers exploded during Lord Jagannath's Chandan Yatra festival in Odisha's Puri on Wednesday night.

More than 20 devotees suffered burn injuries after firecrackers exploded during Lord Jagannath's Chandan Yatra festival in Odisha's Puri on Wednesday night. The condition of several injured individuals is reported to be critical.

The incident happened at 'Chapa Khela' event of the Trinity at Narendra pond as part of the Chandan Yatra celebrations.

Hundreds of devotees had gathered to watch the water sports in the holy pond when sparks from the burning crackers fell on them. All the injured were immediately taken to the district headquarters hospital, but were later referred to other facilities due to the hospital's lack of a dedicated burn unit.

18 critical patients were reportedly shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Some patients were transferred to hospitals in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar for more specialized care.

"Our first priority is shifting the patients to hospital. Patients are being shifted and the burn unit of SCB has been contacted for treatment," said Puri SP Pinak Mishra.
