Residents across Delhi-NCR can expect a dramatic change in weather on Thursday evening as moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong gusty winds is set to sweep through the region, bringing much-needed relief from the heat.
IMD has issued an Orange alert and predicted that parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad are likely to witness intense spells of rain between 5 pm and 7 pm, with wind speeds ranging between 50 and 80 kilometres per hour.
The rain-bearing system is expected to affect different areas at different times, with each location likely to experience rainfall for around 30 to 45 minutes.
While the duration may be relatively short, the intensity of the showers could be enough to cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and briefly disrupt traffic during the evening rush hour.
The incoming rain is expected to provide significant relief from the hot and humid conditions that have prevailed across the National Capital Region over the past few days. Meteorologists say temperatures are likely to fall noticeably once the showers arrive, setting the stage for a cooler and more pleasant evening.
The weather activity is being driven by moisture-laden winds and atmospheric instability over northwestern India. As warm air near the surface interacts with incoming moisture, towering thunderclouds are expected to develop rapidly over parts of the NCR, triggering thunderstorms, rain and strong winds.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during the period of intense weather activity and avoid taking shelter under trees or unstable structures during thunderstorms.
For office-goers heading home during the evening peak hours, traffic congestion is likely on several major routes, including stretches connecting Delhi with Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad. Motorists have been advised to allow extra travel time and exercise caution on wet roads.
The rainfall is also expected to improve air quality temporarily by washing out dust and pollutants suspended in the atmosphere. Strong winds ahead of the showers may initially raise dust in some locations before rain settles conditions.
With temperatures set to drop and clouds dominating the skyline, Delhi-NCR residents can look forward to a rare spell of pleasant weather after days of oppressive heat and humidity. The evening showers could provide the region with its most significant weather relief in recent days.
