A workers’ protest over wages in Noida escalated into large-scale unrest on Monday. What began as a demonstration quickly turned chaotic, with more than 40,000 factory workers clashing with security forces across over 80 locations. Key roads were blocked, traffic was severely affected, and security was tightened across the city.
The agitation was sparked after the Haryana government raised minimum wages by 35 per cent, leading workers in Noida to demand similar pay.
Workers questioned why they were earning less despite similar work conditions. Many said they work 12-hour shifts but earn only Rs 11,000 to Rs 15,000 a month. Workers claimed companies were not following minimum wage rules set by the central government. Some alleged they were made to sign for double shifts but paid for only one. Protesters said wages should rise to at least Rs 20,000-25,000 to match rising costs.
The situation worsened in Phase-2 and Sector 63, where vehicles were set on fire and stones were thrown. Public and private property was damaged, and several vehicles were torched.
Police used tear gas and deployed heavy security forces to control the situation.
Around 300 people were arrested for arson and vandalism, while over 100 were detained for questioning. Authorities are scanning CCTV footage to identify more individuals involved.
Police said some people from outside the district tried to incite violence after workers had dispersed. Pakistan link is under probe. Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar said a possible Pakistan link is being investigated, citing recent terror-related arrests in the region.
A day after the protests, Uttar Pradesh govrnment said wages had already been revised from April 1, with unskilled workers now earning Rs 13,690, and higher rates for semi-skilled and skilled workers.
Authorities said the situation is under control, with heavy deployment and monitoring in sensitive areas. A committee formed under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has assured workers that their concerns will be addressed.
The Chief Minister appealed for calm and warned against those trying to create unrest. He said the government stands with both workers and industry. Opposition leader Akhilesh Yadav criticised the government, blaming its policies for the unrest. Officials said protests are unlikely to continue. Police have urged people to avoid rumours and maintain peace as efforts continue to restore normalcy.
