The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported death of a nine-year-old girl, a victim of rape and brutal assault, at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The Commission acted following media reports alleging that the child was left waiting in an ambulance for several hours before receiving medical attention.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on 26 May 2025. The child was brought to PMCH in critical condition on 30 May but succumbed to her injuries on 1 June.
Taking note of the serious allegations and potential violation of human rights, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Bihar. The Commission has asked for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.
Media reports also suggest that the same accused had previously sexually assaulted another 12-year-old girl and attempted to kill her. The repetition of such crimes has further raised concerns about the handling of sexual offence cases and law enforcement in the state.
The Commission’s intervention highlights the urgency for accountability and timely response in cases involving sexual violence against minors.
