Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane on Monday announced a new initiative to register all jhatka mutton shops across the state under the newly-launched Malhar certificate, emphasising that they will be run exclusively by Hindus. Rane announced the creation of a jhatka meat suppliers' certification platform called MalharCertification.com, adding that such outlets would be 100 per cent Hindu-operated.

"Today we have taken an important step for the Hindu community from Maharashtra. This thought is being brought for Hindu community through which Hindus will get access to mutton shops selling Jhatka mutton for Hindus," said Rane.

Notably, the Halal Certification that is already in place, assures that shops sell meat in compliance with Muslim law. Contrary to halal practice, jhatka meat is prepared after killing the animal in a painless way with a single blow.

Announcing the initiative, the Maharashtra fisheries minister urged Hindus to not buy mutton from shops which don't have Malhar certification.

"This Malhar certification should be used more and more and Hindus should not buy mutton from shops without Malhar certification. This is what I appeal to people. Jai Shri Ram," Rane added.

The Malhar website describes itself as "a certified platform for Jhatka mutton and chicken vendors." The website further mentions that the goat or sheep meat is prepared and "sacrificed according to Hindu religious traditions."

"This meat is available exclusively through Hindu Khatik community vendors. Therefore, we encourage everyone to purchase mutton only from vendors certified by Malhar," reads the website.
