An Indian couple visiting Canada and their 3-month-old grandchild were killed in a highway vehicle collision. A liquor store robbery suspect being chased by Ontario Police and driving the wrong way crashed with the vehicle in which the Indian family was travelling in.

Four people, including the robbery suspect, were killed in the accident in Canada.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said two of the victims, a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were visiting from India.

In the same vehicle were the parents of the infant – the 33-year-old father and 27-year-old mother. The parents, residents of Ajax, were both taken to hospital for treatment. The mother was treated for serious injuries that she suffered, the SIU stated.

Officials have stated that a deadly car chase began with a robbery at a liquor store in Bowmanville. It ended about 20 minutes later when the suspect, driving a cargo van, led Durham police on a high-speed chase against traffic on Highway 401 in Whitby, about 50 kilometres east of Toronto, reported PTI.

A 38-year-old male passenger from the cargo van was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The autopsies for the victims were conducted in Toronto on Wednesday, stated the SIU.

Seven investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist continue to investigate this case, as stated by SIU.

The SIU, an agency called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault, is handling the investigation.

Milica Maljkovic Birkett, a witness to the deadly police chase who narrowly escaped, recounted her experience. She said she didn't have time to think.

She was on her regular commute on the 401 when suddenly, the suspect van was coming toward her car on the wrong side of the road.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, like what just happened? What's going on?'" Maljkovic Birkett told CBC Toronto on Thursday.

Maljkovic Birkett expressed that it has taken time to process the experience.

"It's so scary. For whatever reason, somehow my life was spared. But (four) others were taken and that was just really heavy," she said.
