India has signed a Rs 1,950-crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of low-level transportable radars for mountainous terrain, in a major move aimed at strengthening the country’s air defence capabilities along sensitive border regions.

The deal is expected to significantly improve the Indian military’s ability to detect and track low-flying aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, and drones in difficult high-altitude and mountainous areas where conventional radar coverage is often limited. Such systems are especially critical for surveillance and early warning along sectors facing China and Pakistan, where terrain can complicate air defence operations.

These radars are designed to be transportable and rapidly deployable, allowing forces to shift them across operational sectors depending on evolving threat assessments. Their mobility makes them particularly valuable in frontier zones where infrastructure is limited but a quick military response is essential.

The contract is also a boost to India’s domestic defence manufacturing push, with BEL, a state-run defence electronics major, continuing to play a central role in building indigenous surveillance and air defence systems.

The acquisition comes at a time when India has been stepping up efforts to modernise its multi-layered air defence network, particularly in the face of growing drone warfare, stand-off strikes, and the increasing use of precision-guided aerial platforms in modern conflicts.

By adding more specialised radar coverage for mountain warfare conditions, the deal is expected to plug critical surveillance gaps and improve the military’s readiness in some of the country’s most strategically sensitive regions.
